On Saturday, February 29th, libraries around the country including are taking part in the first ever National Library Open Day.
Libraries are open most days of course but on Saturday 29th they are issuing a special invitation to everyone in the country to go along to their local library and see everything that’s on offer for them there, completely free.
If it’s been a while since you’ve been in your local library, you might be surprised at what you find.
Libraries are open, welcoming community spaces with lots going on for everyone of all ages and interests. Come along to your local library on the Open Day to get a taste of the clubs, classes, exhibitions, activities and more on offer at your library.
Much of what is going on during National Library Open Day will be suitable for children but there’s plenty for adults too. Here is just a flavour of the experiences that will be on offer on the day:
- Comic illustration workshop and lace making demonstrations in Carlow
- 3D printing and an opportunity to meet the robots in South Dublin
- Board game bonanza, Lego club and ‘Match Attax Meet Up’ in Cork City
- Ukulele workshop in Cork County
- Tours of the new creative recording space in Dublin City
- Slime workshop in Westmeath
- Try Virtual Reality, sow some sunflowers or take part in a treasure hunt in Wexford
- Free health checks in Galway
- Chair exercise classes in Leitrim
- Genealogy Information Session in Louth
- Mindfulness Colouring for all ages in Mullingar

As well as that, library staff will be on hand to show you how your library membership lets you:
- Borrow from 12 million items including the latest releases
- Get eBooks, audiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers free and straight to your device
- Try free online learning and language classes
- Order items online and collect from or return to any library in the country
- Make use of free wifi and digital facilities
- Keep the kids entertained with books and activities
