NPC was delighted to launch the new Parent Consultation Guidelines at the NPC offices on Wednesday 6 May 2026.

The guidelines were created by NPC with the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, and form part of Supporting Parents: A National Model of Parenting Support Services (2022-2027)

The launch brought together parents, practitioners, partners and those working with children and families to discuss how parent consultation can be made more meaningful, inclusive and accessible.

The Parent Consultation Guidelines are a practical step by step resource designed to support organisations, schools, services and groups to plan, deliver and follow up on consultations with parents.

They focus on six different methods of consultation:

  • Online group consultations
  • In person group consultations
  • Survey consultations
  • Online one to one consultations
  • Phone call consultations
  • In person one to one consultations

Each section includes practical information on when to use that method, strengths and limitations, planning steps, delivery guidance, follow up actions, tools, templates and supports.

At the heart of the guidelines is a simple principle:

“If you wouldn’t say it to a parent, don’t write it for them.”

This reflects the importance of clear, respectful and accessible communication when engaging with parents. Consultation should not be about ticking a box. It should create space for parents to be listened to, included and supported in a way that recognises their real experiences.

NPC would like to thank everyone who attended the launch and contributed to the discussion. It was a lovely evening of conversation, reflection and shared commitment to strengthening how parents are involved in decisions that affect children and families.
