The National Parents Council (NPC) is pleased to share the latest findings from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) Ireland 2024. This comprehensive study, conducted by the TobaccoFree Research Institute Ireland at TU Dublin, provides vital information about the behaviours and wellbeing of 15-16-year-old students across Ireland.
What is ESPAD?
ESPAD is the largest cross-national research project of its kind in Europe, gathering data every four years since 1995. The 2024 survey includes responses from over 5,500 post-primary students nationwide, exploring use of tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis, other drugs, as well as gambling, gaming, and social media habits.
Key Findings from ESPAD Ireland 2024
Tobacco and E-Cigarettes: Almost one in four teenagers have tried smoking cigarettes, but e-cigarette use is higher, with nearly one in three having tried vaping. Daily smoking rates are at their lowest in 30 years, while e-cigarette use remains a concern.
Alcohol: Two-thirds of students have tried alcohol, with over a third having consumed it in the past month. The most common age to first drink alcohol is between 14 and 15 years.
Cannabis and Other Drugs: Nearly half of students have tried cannabis or other illicit substances, highlighting the importance of awareness and support.
Gambling and Gaming: The report includes new data on gambling behaviours and the impact of gaming and social media on young people’s wellbeing.
Parental Influence: The study emphasises the role of parental monitoring and peer influence in teenagers’ substance use and risk behaviours.

Why This Matters
Understanding these patterns helps parents, schools, and policymakers create better supports to protect young people’s health and wellbeing. It also highlights areas where families can have a positive impact, such as staying involved and communicating openly with teenagers.
